Welcome to the LBKA Summer 2018 Newsletter.

Spring/Summer Update
We have certainly seen quite a turnaround from what was a very disappointing spring where winter just  did not want to let go! The "Beast from the East" was the final nail in the coffin for many colonies resulting in many losses over the winter period. Results are patchy but overall winter 2017/2018 will go down as a poor one for many beekeepers. Losses as high as 40+% for many apiaries with some hobby beekeepers losing everything.

However nature has a way of compensating and we and the bees have enjoyed through May and June the most sustained spell of fine warm weather for many years. The colonies which survived winter have responded well and many giving a handsome crop of spring honey! Hawthorne was particularly good this year.

We are well in to the swarming season so regular checks on your bees are essential if you don't want to  lose a swarm. If you have taken spring honey off then keep an eye on stores as we enter the "June gap".

Taster Day and Beginners Course

This years Beginners course was very well attended with classes held at Cellan Hall on Sunday afternoons followed by practical sessions at our apiary. We are also grateful to our local Bee Inspector Karen Smith who came along to introduce herself and present the Disease module.

Hopefully our new beginner members will continue to come to our association meetings at the apiary throughout the summer and our winter meetings at Cellan Hall. They were a pleasure to instruct and hopefully will have a long and successful association with Lampeter Beekeepers.

Apiary News

Apiary sessions are well under way now every Sunday afternoon from 2pm. Please come along and meet and chat to other members of the association over a cup of tea. Even if you do not wish to look at the bees it is a good opportunity to pass an hour or so with like minded people who share a common interest.

Contact Derek on 01974 821411 for more info.

Upcoming Events

We have already attended Cae Hir Gardens open day where as always our observation hive created a lot of interest. We shall be at the Cothi Gardeners Plant Fair (at Pumpsaint Hall) 8th July and the Lampeter Food Festival 28th July. Please come along and say hello.

Other News

Once again this year we will be bulk buying Honeybee feed (Invertbee and Fondant) which we will sell on to our members at cost which will represent a significant saving over standard retail prices.

Please let us know by no later than 21st July of the quantities you require so that we may place our order in good time for autumn feeding.

Finally

Sadly Committee Member Paul Smith (Publicity Officer) will have to move away from the area due to personal circumstances. Paul has been a stalwart of the association over the years and his enthusiasm and willingness to help will be greatly missed. Thank you Paul for all your help and good luck with your future move.
Committee member Siobhan Buttimer has volunteered to take over the role and we are sure she will do a fantastic job.

Happy Beekeeping!
